Horse on Livery
My horse has been at Rowanoak for nearly eight weeks. During that time, I have never seen him so relaxed and laid back.
In fact, after a week (when he was still as fit as a flea), I asked Nick if he was pumping “happy gas” through the stables!
However, Nick has a very simple philosophy - relaxed people about the yard equals relaxed horses.
Nick’s horses are not shod - no necessity as they do very little or no road work; they are not clipped or trimmed out - again no need as they do not leave the yard to compete at all and hair and mud do help to keep them warm.
In my opinion, horses are like little boys - they should be allowed to get dirty! In comparison, when he arrived, my boy was clipped out and shod. Hairy horses doing hard work - sweating and out dragging (as in our case) for hours in the rain equals cold, wet horses who take ages to dry out and they do loose condition. I totally agree with Nick that a lot of horses are rugged up for the convenience of the owners rather than the horses. Outdoor rugs were not really invented to save lazy owners from using a brush and a bit of elbow grease but to keep horses warm and dry!! I have discovered over the weeks that Nick has a vast wealth of equine knowledge and accepts the fact that as with humans, every horse is different. It is a pity that more yard owners have not cottoned onto this fact. Some people are so set in their ways and find it impossible to even consider something (which would, actually, benefit their horse) if it is outside what might be termed “normal parameters”. My boy is now out with a couple of friends, minus shoes and rug but with plenty of hay as we are still waiting for the grass to come through properly. As anyone can see from the photos on Nick’s website, all his horses look well, including dear old Frodo, who is in his fourth decade and could do with a set of dentures.
I cannot recommend Nick and his staff highly enough. Yes, the gentleman in question has a few little eccentricities (which in my opinion only enhance his kind and charming personality) but if you want a happy horse and do not have the facilities at home,
then at the very least, go and visit Rowanoak.

SARCOID TREATMENT ( Naturally)
Fergus came to us in early May 2011 and he had sarcoids in 3 different areas.
1 His back under saddle
2 In between his back left leg
3 In between his back right legWe wanted to try a less invasive gentler method than others available on the market.
We asked Nick at Rowanoak who we have known for 5 years and he told us of this natural treatment that he was having sucess with.
So on the 27/5 we started putting the special oil on the sarcoids...."with healing intention".
From approximately 20/6 Nick sent us a slightly altered ointment as Fergus was getting sore in between his legs.
The sarcoid on his back has considerably decreased in size, (depth as well as width) Almost daily some peels off or drops away.
The sarcoid inside his back left leg, (similar to a large marble in size) split in two and then half fell off. A few days later the other half fell off and there is virtually no sign of it now.
The sarcoid inside his right back leg started off flatish and then split into two and are now 2 very small pea shape in size.
We are still carrying on with the treatment and will keep Nick posted with pictures on the improvements as they happen.
We are thrilled with this remedy from Nick and obviously the great improvement for Fergus.

Confidence Building
In the past, I have so often stopped to gaze at the beautiful majestic horses in fields or watched horse and rider trot past me in the car, and thought wistfully how I would love the opportunity to approach a horse and not feel intimidated. My knowledge of horses was limited to where the food went in and where it came out again; so getting up close and spending time with a horse wasn’t something I would attempt without a knowledgeable person with me. Even attending a riding school felt daunting because the expectation was that I was going to have to sit on a horse and ride it!
I’d think, ‘Wouldn’t it be fantastic to be able to develop a relationship with a horse without that pressure; just learning to understand each other, trust each other, feel valued and play together!’
Well, if you are anything like I was, and would like the chance to find out more about the beautiful nature of horses then head for Rowanoak horses in Brecon for the annual Horse Weekend, now in its fourth year, on 23rd and 24th June and meet Nick Sanders and his horses.
I had the privilege of meeting Nick and was left in awe by the way in which he works with horses. In no time at all, Nick taught me how to effortlessly approach and even gently ride one of these stunning creatures. Nick has such a wonderful philosophy about his work and he brings his experience and expertise to promoting a holistic approach, helping both horse and rider/owner overcome fears and traumas in a gentle and compassionate way.
Nick has recently introduced Horse Agility, an increasingly popular sport, to his repertoire. Not only is it fun because it allows for all levels of ability and age to take part, but it’s also very therapeutic. This is such a wonderful confidence builder for children of all ages and particularly beneficial to rescue horses and ponies who require a gentle approach.
The weekend consists of the following exhibits and demos;
Whatever your level of Equine knowledge, this annual event promises a fun and informative weekend for the whole family. Camping is available for those wishing to make the most of this 2 day event, where there will be many opportunities for ‘hands on’ experiences, amongst the 41 acres of rolling hills and woodland all in a relaxed family friendly setting.
Enjoy the weekend meeting lots of new 2 and 4 legged friends.

Horse Agility
When my horse William and myself first started doing horse agility I thought 'oh god I cant do this with William' but when we gave it a go it was brilliant. I had a few issues with William going over the bridge but with time and patience and a good trainer helping me to get William through his issues, he mastered horse agility no problem. William has been doing horse agility for a year and has won 7 rosettes. Horse agility is aimed to get the horse to listen and communicate with their owner and to teach the horse to get used to different obstacles.William enjoys doing horse agility I really do recommend everyone gives it a go and it gets you to spend time with your horse as well. I love doing horse agility, we have fun days and competitions up at Rowanoak.
Please come and join us, we'll show you how it's done. We have the best trainer - Nick Sanders. Nick has helped me a lot with William, if it wasnt for Nick I don't know where I'd be now I would just like to say thank you Nick for everything.
